Music: GLPOSTED 23.07.2015
Melbourne duo GL are about cosmic synths, drum-machine goodness and dreamy vocals. Their music has that stratospheric mid-80s feel, harking back to the romance of cosmopolitan ice creams, palm trees and bleached denim. Signed on first listen by new Sydney label Plastic World, the duo’s debut release is out soon. Check out our inteview with Graeme Pogson and Ella Thompson from GL.
1. What does the name GL mean?
The G stands for Graeme and the L for El-la
2. When did you know you wanted to create music?
We have both played music most of our lives. For better or worse I’ve never really had a backup plan. I don’t really know how to do many other things, I admire people who are skilled in multiple areas. Music was my way of getting out of sport at school so I won’t be an athlete anytime soon.
3. How do you tackle creating an original tune?
The music we write together often comes from jams and then turns into something with a bit more structure. I like to finish lyrics on my own but sometimes it’s fun to keep words that started as a mumble.
4. Who are your biggest music influences?
Aretha Franklin, Debbie Harry, Whitney Houston, Brian Eno, Lion Sylvers III, Kevin McCord, James Mtume.
5. What’s your favourite track to dance to?
How Will I Know - Whitney Houston
6. What song would you put on after a break up?
Ain’t No Way - Aretha Franklin
7. What’s the best music gig you’ve ever been to?
Probably Aretha at Radio City Hall in New York last year. Just couldn’t believe I was seeing her in real life!
8. Why should people see GL live?
I am not sure. It’s always such a nice surprise to see new faces at a show it’s the only really tangible way of telling how the music is connecting with an audience.
9. Do you enjoy wine? Any favourites?
We love a good drop, especially a few reds at a late night recording or rehearsal.
10. What’s your favourite place to drink wine?
With dinner is my favourite.
11. What’s coming up for GL?
We are playing some shows at Hugs & Hugs this month and working on our first full-length album.
